Amb Warhol va començar tot: l’estreta col·laboració entre Suñol i Vijandre
«La idea no és viure sempre, la idea és crear alguna cosa que sí que ho faci». És una de les frases que defineixen la personalitat d’Any Warhol (1928-1987), considerat el pare del pop art i una de les persones cabdals per entendre el gran canvi que es produeix a la societat a partir de mitjans dels anys seixanta, quan la cultura passa a convertir-se en un espectacle. Amb el mateix propòsit que perduri en la memòria col·lectiva, la Fundació Suñol ha produït l’exposició Warhol-Vijande: más que Pistolas, Cuchillos, Cruces, que reviu la visita de l’artista nord-americà a Madrid l’any 1983. Una excusa perfecta per visitar al barri de les Corts de Barcelona de forma gratuïta una de les col·leccions privades més importants de l’Estat i per conèixer de primera mà treballs de Warhol.
Amb Warhol va començar tot. Així es podria definir l’estreta vinculació que van mantenir amb el temps l’empresari català Josep Suñol Soler (1927-2019), en el seu rol de col·leccionista, i el madrileny Fernando Vijande (1930-1986), com a galerista. Una de les obres més representatives de la col·lecció privada Suñol Soler és un retrat de Mao, adquirit el 1975, i que va marcar l’inici d’una fructífera col·laboració. Warhol va pintar una sèrie de deu Maos (10 Early Maos) el 1972, quan el president Richard Nixon va visitar la Xina després d’un període d’un ferotge anticomunisme i en plena Guerra Freda. És considerada una de les seves obres més excepcionals, ja que converteix Mao en una icona pop després d’alterar la seva imatge, com havia fet temps enrere amb Marilyn Monroe.
L’exposició mostra algunes de les obres de Warhol adquirides amb el temps per la Col·lecció Suñol Soler, com la serigrafia #128 de la sèrie Ladies and Gentlemen, inicialment anomenada Drag Queens. Warhol va convertir el seu estudi d’art de Nova York, The Factory, en un lloc de trobada de famosos i figures de la contracultura, amb dones transsexuals i drags, que van convertir-se en personatges de les seves obres. En aquest cas, les models eren joves d’origen negre i llatí que actuaven en un local de la Vuitena Avinguda, que a partir d’un projecte de The Andy Warhol Fundation for The Visual Arts van sortir de l’anonimat el 2014 per conèixer la identitat de cadascuna. Gràcies a aquest treball artístic, Warhol és un dels creadors més venerats de la comunitat LGTBI a escala global.
La identitat i el gènere són molt presents a la mostra, ja que s’inclou un espai central dedicat a 20 retrats de gran format de la sèrie Imatges Alterades, on Warhol apareix amb set perruques diferents i amb el rostre maquillat, mostrant el seu alter ego femení. Van ser realitzades el 1981 pel seu amic i fotògraf Chirstopher Makos i també pertanyen a la Col·lecció Suñol.
La visita de Warhol a Madrid el 1983 quedarà immortalitzada amb un documental que s’estrenarà a finals d’aquest any, del qual ja es poden veure els primers quinze minuts a l’exposició. La conductora és Alaska, que amb només divuit anys va ser una de les assistents a la inauguració de la mostra Pistolas, Cuchillos, Cruces, produïda per l’ocasió a partir de l’encàrrec de Fernando Vijande per a la seva galeria. Precisament, un retrat doble realitzat per Warhol al galerista és l’obra que ja va estar present a Madrid aleshores i ara dona la benvinguda a la Fundació Suñol. La temàtica escollida associava l’Estat espanyol al passat de la Guerra Civil i al poder de l’Església. Així i tot, persones del seu entorn també ho relacionen amb el mateix univers de l’artista nord-americà, en una Nova York que vivia episodis de molta inseguretat. Tampoc falten veus que demanen que aquella exposició, plena d’il·lustracions de pistoles, ganivets i creus, es pugui veure als Estats Units.
